ABOUT ADFAS TRAVEL

The Association of Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Associations (ADFAS) has run its travel program for almost a decade. The travel program grew out of the popular lecture series conducted for ADFAS members in 30 societies in major cities and regional areas throughout Australia. Each year ADFAS Travel offers just four or five tours to Europe, the United Kingdom, Asia, America and Australia. The tours are designed to reflect the interests and ADFAS members and their friends. For more information on ADFAS' activities, visit www.adfas.org.au

ADFAS Travel is managed by Academy Travel, a specialist provider of cultural tours to Europe, Asia and America. Each year Academy Travel conducts 15 to 20 tours in the fields of archaeology, architecture, fine arts, history and music. Academy Travel also works with leading Australian universities in the delivery of international summer schools. For more information on Academy Travel, visit www.academytravel.com.au

If you are an ADFAS member and have some ideas for future tour destinations, we'd love to hear from you. Email your suggestions to info@adfastravel.com.au

Who participates in ADFAS Travel's program?

ADFAS tours are open to everyone! As well as ADFAS members we welcome their friends and all those with a strong interest in history, culture and the arts. Generally speaking, our tour participants are seasoned travellers who are looking for something a little different from mass-market group tours. The opportunity to understand and enjoy a few sites in-depth - rather than rush from one site to another - is a major attraction for many participants, as is the chance to travel with a like-minded group.

Key features of ADFAS Travel's journeys

  • Specialised group leaders. We use popular and experienced ADFAS and NADFAS lecturers, as well as experts in the history and culture of the places we visit. As well as academic expertise ADFAS tour leaders are enthusiastic teachers with a genuine love for the places we visit! Where appropriate we also work with local guides and cultural associations. On many tours a professional tour manager also travels with the group.
  • Extended stays in most destinations, rather than one or two-night hops. As well as making your travel more relaxing, you can attend to practical matters, such as laundry and emails, with ease.
  • Informal background talks before you visit sites, museums and galleries. This leaves you free to spend your time actually looking at the things you've travelled to see, rather than straining to listen to a local tour guide.
  • Flexibility in daily activities. Because of our extended stays you have the chance to pursue your own interests and perhaps catch up with friends overseas. You can also opt out of entire days if you wish to relax or do something different.
  • Flexibility in travel arrangements. Although we have booked group fares, you can take a 'land only' package to combine your ADFAS tour with other travel, arrange to arrive before the group, or stay on afterwards. For most tours we are also able to arrange stopovers to break your outbound or return journey.
